One in four people experience a mental health problem each year in England, however only one in eight people receive any form of treatment.
For many, problems start in childhood and are lifelong, with significant multi-morbidity (having two or more long-term health conditions) and reduced life chances.
The impact of social deprivation is greater for mental health than any other disease area, with increasing incidence and poorer outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted these inequalities.
Early translational research is urgently needed to identify new treatments and better ways of delivery.
Our Mental Health Theme contains the following programmes, which are based on our established strengths in those areas. They are:
- Neuroscience
- Digital and data science
This will allow the development of theory-driven new treatments within a framework of prevention, personalised health and integration with our other research themes.
