Dr Alex Oldroyd wins best research presentation at Manchester Medical Society, Section of Medicine
Congratulations to Dr Alex Oldroyd, who was recently awarded the best Manchester Medical Society, Section of Medicine research presentation.
Dr Oldroyd is a Clinical Research Fellow in the Musculoskeletal Theme of the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre. At the Manchester Medical Society
Section of Medicine event, he presented the findings from his research entitled “The temporal relationship between anti-TIF1 antibody positivity and cancer onset”.
In his presentation, Dr Oldroyd discussed how he found that the 10 year risk of cancer in people with dermatomyositis who are TIF1 positive was substantially higher, compared to those who are TIF1 negative – 38% vs 15%. Interestingly, the risk was only increased in the three years prior to and following dermatomyositis onset.
Other findings included identifying a cut of age of 39 years old, with no one who was TIF1 positive under 39 developing cancer. Ovarian cancer was also found to have a particularly increased risk in TIF1 positive people.
