‘Breathtaking Lungs’ Event
The BRC Respiratory theme has been working with the Public Programmes Team to deliver the ‘Breathtaking Lungs’ project, which culminated in a public event at Wythenshawe Forum on 21 June 2018 (‘Clean Air Day’).
Patients with respiratory conditions and members of the wider public in Wythenshawe took part in discussions and focus groups, art and music activities in the lead up to the event, which aimed to raise awareness of lung health, breathing conditions and respiratory research.
There was a fantastic turnout on the day with around 250 people, from toddlers to people in their 90s, joining in with activities including singing and harmonica sessions, interactive artwork, themed family storytime and craft sessions, spirometry readings and opportunities to find out more about the lungs and respiratory research.
Developing new treatments and preventing disease really depends on research being a collaboration between researchers and patients. As researchers, we need the advice and insight that only people who experience lung conditions can offer.
