Acknowledgements

NIHR Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs) are a key part of the translational research landscape in the UK.

Acknowledging NIHR support helps raise the profile of BRCs, ensures NIHR support is transparent to all and helps NIHR to track the impact of its research, enabling it to evidence the value of research funding.

Acknowledging NIHR

From September 2024, please use the correct wording for NIHR Manchester BRC acknowledgements.

A statement should be incorporated within the acknowledgements of publications and other disseminations of research results following studies undertaken at Manchester BRC.

Scenario 1

Use the BRC funded statement if: Your research is fully or majority funded by the BRC

“This study/research is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) (NIHR203308). The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.”

Please also acknowledge any other NIHR support the research may have received.

Scenario 2

Instances where the research was funded by another funder but delivered through* the BRC
Statement (including funder and disclaimer)

“[Research funder statement] This study has been delivered through the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) (NIHR203308). The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the [name of the research funder], the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.”

*We define ‘delivered through’ as a project that is supported by Manchester BRC workforce, resources and/or infrastructure to meet the outputs as published, for example BRC-funded or affiliated project managers, use of trial delivery teams, technology platforms or support services, a PhD student supervised by a BRC Theme/programme Lead.

Please also acknowledge any other NIHR support the research may have received, for example, through a research programme award.

Scenario 3

Minimum statement to be used in instances where there are funder details and/or word count restrictions AND the research was funded by another funder but delivered through the BRC
Acknowledgement only (for use within a broader set of acknowledgements and/or disclaimers)

“The research was carried out at the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) (NIHR203308).”

Scenario 4

Instances where the researcher, but not the research study or project, is funded or supported by the BRC

“[Researcher name] is funded/supported [delete as appropriate] by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) (NIHR203308).”
